It’s safe to say I’ve pretty much tried every natural deodorant on the market. From the supposedly miracle-working ones that come in a pot and you have to apply with your fingers (some find this weird – my husband hated it), to ones claiming to be natural but still contain traces of aluminium or other such toxic products. None totally fit the bill.
I came across an advertisement for Ben & Anna when flicking through Green Parent magazine, and I’d never heard of it before. I got in touch with them and asked if they’d like me to review it. Truthfully, I didn’t want to pay even more money for yet another deodorant that didn’t work.
But here’s the clincher – I’ve been truly converted. This deodorant WORKS. They haven’t paid me to say this, they simply sent me a few of the different options which I trialled for a month. Plus, I NEVER promote products I don’t believe in and I love their ethos.
Ben and Anna lived in Berlin and as a strictly vegan couple, always looked for cruelty-free, natural body products but (like me), could never find the ideal deodorant so they made their own.
It uses the natural effect of bicarbonate of soda to make it work, along with other natural ingredients and beautiful, natural scents.
It’s the ingredient Maranta Arundinacea root powder or arrowroot for short, that ensures that excess moisture is absorbed and that the armpit feels dry. Honestly, the only other deodorant that I ever found achieved this was the Sure Maximum Protection anti-perspirant (this was many years ago, before my lifestyle change). Aluminium and other toxins used in these sorts of anti-perspirants, that stop you perspiring thereby thereby essentially ‘plugging’ sweat ducts that are essential for excretion, can be absorbed in breast tissue leading to breast cancer. No thanks.
Ben & Anna deodorant also:
- Protects against moisture and odour
- Never greasy or sticky
- No aluminum, PEG’s, Parabene or Phtalate
- Vegan, cruelty-free & gluten-free
- Certified organic and natural
It is quite a hard stick; it doesn’t glide on like conventional, toxin-heavy deodorant sticks do, which I did find difficult at the beginning as it can feel a bit rough. But the trick is to either put it on straight after the shower or slightly wet the top before applying. In cold months you could even put it on top of the radiator for a minute or so to soften slightly. It’s a small price to pay for a genuinely great deodorant that won’t leave you with breast cancer.
You can find them on Instagram too @benandannauk, where you can see all the different scents. I’ve now tried all of them and my favourite scents by far are Provence and Nordic Timber. They are all unisex but my husband feels that Nordic Timber is a little more ‘masculine’ so he likes this one and I use it too.
Another wonderful thing about the company is how they have updated from using plastic packaging to paper tubes. This really spoke to me.
I hope this encourages you to try out their wonderful products.
Love & health,
Lauren
